Chess in Bucharest, sector by sector

Bucharest plays its chess through clubs: sports associations affiliated to the Romanian federation, spread across the six sectors, with more in Otopeni, Snagov and Chitila. Children learn in academies that teach from Monday to Sunday, adults meet on Thursday evenings in Drumul Taberei, and weekends fill with numbered series at Hotel CARO, Mega Mall and ICHB Colentina.

Chess960 at a Bucharest board

One trace of Chess960 played face to face turned up in the Bucharest area. On 6 April 2025 the Reuniunea Șahistă Chess Architect, a one-day gathering in the Unirii View building, ran a FreeStyle section, as its listing on the tournament server calls it. The Fischer Random and 960 events listed for Romania in 2025 and 2026 were played in Arad, Sibiu, Pitești and Bacău, well outside this area.

In Chess960 the pieces on the back row start in one of 960 shuffled orders, so memorised openings stop helping from the first move. Between events at a real board, it can be played online at ch960.com.

How this directory is kept

The directory holds 78 cards, 78 of them active or waiting for a newer trace. They rest on the club register of the Romanian chess federation, the chess-results tournament server and the own pages of clubs and academies, most recently read on .

Cards are ordered by the date of their newest trace, never by a judgement of quality. Where no page answers a question, the card says “not stated by sources”. The source marks, the status lines and what the directory leaves out are set out in the editorial policy.

Has a club moved, or a series changed its hall?

Bucharest clubs change halls, open new centres and start new numbered series every season. If a card has fallen behind, or a club, course or tournament is missing, send a short note with a link to the page that shows it.
